Your tears expose
my weakness,
not yours.

No.  You wear them
proudly
like a raiment,
jewels fastened
around your wrists
and neck,
flaunting their
extravagance
with each brave
heave of your
chest.

And I – I reach
for a blanket
to drape over
your shoulders.

Hush, now.
Douse their brilliance.
For every time
one catches me
in its shine,
I break under the
weight of your
unmatched strength.

Since the day you
ripped your body
out of mine, I’ve patted
and soothed
and rocked
the charms you left
scattered across
the bedroom floor,

as if I could pull
dew out of
the earth
and claim another day
of drought.
